Ryan St. John

About me

Ryan came to martial arts through a lifetime of team sports, including football, baseball, and basketball. These shaped his early years and gave him a deep understanding of what it takes to perform under pressure, compete with integrity, and keep showing up when things get hard. Eight years on, he has channelled all of that into teaching karate at Action Karate South Philly. His approach on the mat is patient and technically precise, but the sessions never feel stiff. Kids aged seven to 12 respond to him particularly well, and it’s easy to see why: he meets them exactly where they are, holds them to a high standard, and makes the whole thing genuinely enjoyable.

Teaching philosophy

Ryan’s philosophy is straightforward, and it shows in everything he does on the mat. He believes that a child who feels genuinely seen by their instructor will push harder, absorb more, and carry what they learn well beyond the dojo. That belief shapes how he structures every class. He keeps sessions technically rigorous because standards matter, but he also keeps them fun because children disengage the moment something stops feeling worth their effort. And for the kids who come in quietly, the ones who hang back or take longer to trust a new environment, Ryan is particularly patient. He doesn’t rush that process. He knows that confidence built carefully tends to stick. Over eight years of teaching, he has watched students move from barely willing to raise their hand in class to standing at the front of the room leading warm-ups. That shift, more than any belt or trophy, is what keeps him coming back.
