Every child and adult deserves a place where they truly belong. And at Action Karate, that’s exactly what we’ve built. Our special needs martial arts program was created by a 4th-degree black belt who wrote a doctoral dissertation on applying martial arts for students with different abilities.
This isn’t a modified version of a standard class. It’s a purpose-built program.
And it works. Our students include kids and adults with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, anxiety, speech and learning delays, Parkinson’s, non-verbal communication styles, physical limb differences, and more. Many of them were turned away by other activities. Here, they earn black belts.
Classes are available as private lessons, mixed-ability group sessions, assisted classes with an instructor, one-on-one with a peer buddy, or alongside a caregiver. We work with families to figure out what setting helps their student grow best. And we adjust as they do.
One of our own instructors, Master Colan Magill, was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and navigated Nonverbal Learning Disorder growing up. He knows firsthand that what works for one student may hold another back. That lived experience shapes how our whole team approaches teaching. That is with patience, flexibility, and genuine curiosity about what makes each individual tick.
Our Kids Karate Program is packed with powerful highlights designed to support your child’s physical, mental, and emotional growth each session combines fun, structured training.
Martial arts builds real physical skills that many special needs students struggle to access in traditional sports.
The structured, rhythmic nature of martial arts training is uniquely effective at developing attention and emotional regulation.
Many special needs students have been excluded from group activities. At Action Karate, the group is part of the medicine.
Most activities aren't designed with neurodiverse or differently-abled students in mind. Instead, they're adapted after the fact. Our special needs program was built specifically for students with a wide range of additional needs, with class formats ranging from fully private sessions to assisted group classes. We start by learning what works for your child, and we build from there.
Our students include people with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, anxiety, sensory processing differences, speech and learning delays, physical limb differences, Parkinson's, and more. If you're unsure whether the program is right for your child or loved one, reach out and talk to us directly. We've likely worked with someone in a similar situation before.
Both options are available. Families can choose private lessons, assisted group classes, one-on-one peer training, or classes with caregiver participation. We work with you to figure out the right starting point and adjust as your child grows more comfortable and confident on the mat.
All Action Karate instructors are background-checked, safety-certified, and trained in inclusive teaching practices. Many have personal experience with ADHD, learning differences, or supporting students with disabilities. And beyond credentials, they stay in close communication with parents because you know your child best, and that partnership makes all the difference.
Progress looks different for every student, and that's the point. For one child, success is staying on the mat for a full class. For another, it's making eye contact with an instructor for the first time. For another still, it's earning a black belt after years of consistent training. We've seen all of it. We track your child's individual milestones and celebrate them because every step forward is real, and it matters.
With experienced instructors and over 30 locations nationwide, it’s easy to start your journey in a positive, motivating environment.
