Building Real Skills for Real Life in Parkwood, Philadelphia

Your child doesn’t need another screen, another practice that feels like a chore, or another activity they beg to skip. At Action Karate Parkwood, every class is built around real movement, real growth, and real fun for kids who are just starting out and adults who are ready to challenge themselves.

Adult Martial Arts Classes

Real fitness meets real discipline. Adult classes at Parkwood teach practical self-defense, build strength, and sharpen mental focus. All in an environment that respects where you are today and pushes you toward something better.

Kids Martial Arts Classes

Ninja Sharks Ages 3 to 6 Classes

Big energy, tiny feet, and a whole lot of heart. Our Ninja Sharks program is designed specifically for young children who are ready to move, play, and start building focus and coordination in a safe, structured setting. Special Needs Martial Arts Classes

Every student deserves to grow. Our instructors at Parkwood are trained in inclusive teaching methods using visual, verbal, and tactile cues and working with IEPs to make sure no student is left behind on the mat or off it.

Why Action Karate

What Parents in Parkwood Keep Telling Their Friends About Us

The families who train here don’t just stay. They send their neighbors. And they all say roughly the same thing: this place changed something in my kid. Here’s why.

Your child will be seen, not just supervised

Class sizes cap at 30, and our instructors know their students by name, by personality, and by what they're working on. There's no blending into the back row here. Every student gets noticed, pushed, and celebrated.

Progress is built in and visible

The belt system gives kids a concrete target that's always just within reach. Each rank earned is a proof point your child can see, touch, and be proud of. And every small win on the mat has a way of spilling into every other area of their life.

Background-checked instructors who genuinely care

Every instructor at Action Karate Parkwood is background-checked, safety-certified, and here because they love what martial arts does for young people. Miss Kat Gallen has spent 11 years at this school precisely because she believes in the mission.

Good afternoon my name is John I have or should I say I’m raising five grandchildren whose mom committed suicide some years ago unfortunately and I decided to take them out of the system and raise them and legally adopted or five the baby was 10 months and the oldest one now is 17 get ready to turn 18 tomorrow. It’s been a struggle and the little one my heart our name is Phoenix. She was with me one day, I was going to Citizens bank right next-door to action karate and she said I wanna go there and I signed her up and it’s been a. And it’s been an awesome amazing Journey, Miss cat, and the crew there at action karate has really been a big help and me guiding her in the right direction right now she’s working on a black belt leadership. Hope I haven’t put too much. Just wanted to share how amazing action karate has been to my family and I.🙏❤️

My family has had such a wonderful experience with action Karate Parkwood! When we first started, we were just hoping my daughter would learn a bit of discipline and confidence — but it’s been so much more than that. The instructors are incredibly patient, encouraging, and genuinely care about each student’s growth both on and off the mat. My daughter went from being a shy and small voice child to being loud and a leader in all aspects of her life.

It’s been amazing to watch my daughter build focus, respect, and self-belief while also having so much fun. Even as a mom, I’ve been inspired to join in and challenge myself. The sense of community here is truly special, and I’m so grateful for how this journey has brought my family closer together.

If you’ve ever thought about martial arts for your kids or yourself, I can’t recommend Action Karate Parkwood enough. It’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made!

I can’t say enough good things about Action Karate, especially when it comes to their inclusiveness and support for neurodivergent kids. I have a 6 year old son and starting new things like karate can sometimes feel overwhelming for him. From day one, the staff and kids at Action Karate made him feel welcome, seen, and supported.

Mr. Litton has been incredible. He took the time to understand my son’s individual needs and gave him individual sessions that really helped build his confidence before joining the group classes. The accommodations they provided weren’t just thoughtful they were meaningful. My son was never made to feel different or out of place. Instead, he was encouraged, celebrated, and guided with patience and understanding.

Thanks to the team at Action Karate, he’s learning more than just martial arts he’s learning focus, self-regulation, and confidence in a space where he truly feels he belongs. As a parent, I’m beyond grateful and couldn’t ask for a better, safer space for my son.

Highly recommend, especially to families with neurodivergent children looking for a place that genuinely cares and adapts to meet your child where they are.

My son has been training at Action Karate Parkwood for about a year now. To say that he has grown into himself and exudes confidence would be an understatement. He knows with hard work and determination that he can get through any obstacle. He is learning not only to focus, but to think about the what and why of a situation. His physical strength and coordination continue to improve with each passing week. He sets goals and achieves them: at the dojo, at home and even at school. Always having been a respectful child with manners, he is now learning to understand people and how to appropriately interact in any given circumstance.

The instructors are fantastic and they take time to get to know not only the student, but also their families. We were welcomed with open arms and it truly does feel like a community, something we very much needed. The staff feel more like extended family at this point. They are also an inclusive dojo and do not turn anyone away.

They take their time and give one on one attention when needed so the students can reach their full potential. They are able to form relationships with everyone and no one feels left out. My son looks forward to seeing them each and every class. They have made such a positive impact on him that even talks about one day becoming a karate instructor himself.

Action Karate Parkwood also does a lot of events to help the kids develop connections outside of their lessons. They have special theme nights where the younger students can come and have fun for a few hours (laser tag/gladiator/arts and crafts/science/movie nights). It’s also not unusual at all for a community event to take place at Action Karate Parkwood where everyone is included. They really do give back and it is a guaranteed great time. My family’s first interaction with the folks at Action Karate Parkwood was actually at an Easter event in their parking lot.

I am genuinely looking forward to seeing where our journey with Action Karate Parkwood takes us in the coming years. I would highly suggest Action Karate Parkwood to anyone in the area for either themselves or their children and do so whenever the occasion arises.

I started my son Bryce at Action karate earlier this year and I have to say it’s one of the best decisions. The kindness and compassion they show my son and me . They truly care about the kids and the parents. My son’s confidence has grown and the smile on his face every time we walk in there. Bryce is autistic and is in private lessons he loves it! His instructors are phenomenal. It’s not just karate lesson. They’re a part of my support system with our family. I can’t say enough of how much that means to the both of us.
Bryce has come a long way over the past year we both have and it’s great that action Karate is a part of that for us.
I wish I could give more the 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Our Story

Rooted in Parkwood Since 2003

Action Karate Parkwood has been training families in this corner of Philadelphia for over two decades. That’s two decades of belt ceremonies, of watching shy kids become leaders, of sending students into the world with more confidence than they had the day they walked through the door. This isn’t a branch that opened last year. It’s a neighborhood institution.

Miss Kat Gallen has been teaching at this location for 11 years. That kind of continuity means your child builds a real relationship with their instructor, not a revolving door of new faces.
Voted Best Martial Arts School in Philadelphia. Not a self-nomination but a recognition from this city’s families that something real is happening at this school.
Parkwood has long welcomed students with additional learning needs. Miss Kat’s background in inclusion models and IEP support means this is a school that actually knows how to teach every kind of learner, not one that just says it does.
Our Senior Demo Team competes and wins. And every student at every level is trained with the same attention to detail because the habits built in class translate directly to results on the mat and in life.

Through my former years as a secondary education teacher in inclusion models, I utilize whole brain strategies, work with IEPS and instruct through visual, verbal and tactile cues and modifications for each student.
